NEW LEGISLATION ON LAMP WASTE DISPOSAL
End of life discharge lamps now need to be handled differently since the
implementation of the Landfill Directive and the new Hazardous Waste
Regulations throughout the UK.
In 2004 the UK Landfill Directive closed down 240 of the 250 sites that
could previously accept hazardous waste. But what created even greater
changes in the handling of your end of life lamps came in July 2004 in
Scotland and in 2005 in England and Wales with the introduction of the
new regulation.
As a contractor we have to register with the Environment Agency and
produce a quarterly report on every consignment of hazardous waste
made. This report is then sent to the Environment Agency and a charge
is made which is now compulsory. This is mandatory and not optional
and is in effect today! It is therefore necessary for us to pass on the
charges to our customers at a rate of £0.85 per lamp 6ft and under, and
£1.65 per lamp 8ft and over.
ENVIRONMENTAL CHARGES
Charges will be applicable as extras for glass levies, refrigeration as well
as council and disposal charges.
